Paypal Pay in 4 « Something went wrong » but still have pending transaction on bank statement.

Hello,
I attempted to use Paypal « Pay in 4 » as an option during checkout for an online store. I went through all the motions and at the end received a message which said « Sorry, something went wrong. Please try another payment method ». With such a vague response I simply backed out and tried a second time with the same result.
Low and behold, later found out that they did successfully ping my bank because I now see 2 pending transactions for the requests. Now obviously these will fall off within a few business days which is a a bit unfair… But what is causing this? Has anyone dealt with this before and resolved it?
