The thread was subsequently marked as ‘solved’, although after six whole pages of posts it actually wasn’t… So anyways, I purchased an item from a site called Peoforum.com, which looked like a legit Overstock.com kind of seller. Because I had never heard of them, I googled to see if they were on anyone’s radar and found nothing. Soon after my purchase, they furnished me with a USPS tracking number. But when checking the number I discovered it was from an old delivery from a different shipper that I had already received ten days earlier! I suddenly realized the seller had no intention of shipping the item they ‘sold’ me. It appears that this website (and others like them) are exploiting a vulnerability somewhere and providing buyers with old shipping information to make their sites appear legitimate, even if only initially. But more importantly, providing shipping information, despite being bogus, also helps them to deflect fraud investigations made by third party providers like PayPal. So I immediately filed a claim with PayPal which of course they automatically denied, even though I provided proof of the bogus shipping info. Undeterred, I eventually found a PayPal link to at least report the fraudulent website, but the link misdirects users to an unrelated page. Clearly, PayPal is not interested in conducting legitimate fraud investigations. And the fraudsters know it. If PayPal were so inclined, there would be thousands of such investigations each year, which would cost millions of dollars to conduct …not to mention all of the transaction fees they would be forced to surrender. Instead, and despite what consumers are told to believe, PayPal has taken a veiled pro seller, anti buyer stance. In fact, in the above mentioned thread, advice is repeatedly given for claimants to request that denied claims be reopened despite PayPal informing it’s users that closed claims cannot be reopened. The strategy seems to be to wear you out in hopes that you’ll eventually go away. They may get their wish for it could easily be argued that by turning a blind eye, PayPal is complicit in every fraudulent transaction claim it refuses to fully investigate and subsequently denies. PayPal, please take our claims more seriously…
