Paypal asking for more money via ebay gift card??

So I was trying to sell a couple art kits on ebay. This guy wanted to buy them and he asked if I could put $400 dollars worth of ebay gift cards (so 2 $200 ones) in with the package. I figured why not because he was gonna send me the money for it along with the payment for the package. The only thing was paypal said I couldn’t get the money until I sent a picture of he card and the receipt. Normal- they want to make sure I send it instead of keeping the money. Well, here’s where things went wrong, and where I just became completely stupid and desperate for my money back. Pay Pal said hey you need to upgrade your account and you can do that by buys another 300 dollar ebay gift card and email this image to us. I didn’t want to but I wanted my money and the way things were worded I thought I’d get it all back, so I did it. Then they said hey the first 400 dollars for the other two cards were from the sender, so we gave that back to him and need you to pay it. Now by this point I’d been fed up and just wanted at least what I’d spent back already. I was pretty much broke and no one cared. I ended up getting another 100 dollar gift card, and now I got an email a few hours ago saying they’d be in touch with my account credited. I feel like I got scammed and I’m not getting any of my money back. I know it’s partially my fault for falling for all of this, but I never use pay pal this was my first time and I was desperate for the money I spent to come back to me. I feel like nothing will happen and no one will help. I’ve messaged pay pal asking about this and sending pictures, but no response yet. Is there anything I can do and if so how?? Any help at all will be appreciated. I’m at my wits end.
