Gumtree exchange – does this sound fishy or is it just me?

Hi there, I’m trying to buy a kitten off gumtree and was given a paypal account to pay my deposit of £40 to reserve the kitten. After I paid it, the lady said oh actually can you please pay into my neighbour’s account as i am trying to refund someone else’s deposit so my account is now pending and I cannot withdraw your deposited money. When i looked at my paypal account, it showed the transaction was complete and the amount had been received by the recipient so I could not cancel it. She then said she will call Paypal and ask them to refund my £40 and if I could then send it again to the other account. She then later on did send me a refund which showed up on my paypal as received. She said as it was after midnight, maybe her pending status was lifted and her account was enabled again. But then asked if i could then resend her the £40 in the same account that she sent me the refund from. I am now very confused and feel that something doesn’t sound right. If her account was enabled again, why would she refund me the money only to ask me to send it back the very next minute? Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks, Naoma
