paypal credit scam do not apply

### Beware of the PayPal Credit Card Sales Pitch: Is It Just a Scam?

Have you been the unwitting recipient of the PayPal email inviting you to apply for their credit card? For many, this can be seen as a potentially lucrative opportunity, but is it as simple as it seems? My experience tells a different story. My credit scores are solid, sitting comfortably at 701, 707, and 733 across the three major credit bureaus. Believe it or not, I’ve been historically fortunate with credit, having never been denied before. But this time, PayPal said no. And in a world where I can usually get the credit I ask for, this raised a few eyebrows.

#### What’s Behind the PayPal Credit Card?

PayPal’s “offer” to extend credit seems to be rooted in a different motive. Let me lay out the hypothesis and a few reasons why this might not just be a simple credit card application.

1. **Information Gathering**: One of the primary motivations for PayPal could be to gather as much customer information as possible. In today’s data-driven economy, not only is the data a valuable asset, but how carefully it’s managed and whether it’s sold to third parties is a significant concern. When you apply, you’re providing your financial details, income status, employment information, and more. This personal and financial data can be incredibly valuable.

2. **Secondary Market**: Have you ever wondered where your information goes once you apply for credit? There is a significant market for consumer data, and it’s entirely possible that PayPal is using the application process as a means to sell your data to third-party companies. They advertise their credit card, you apply and provide your information, and who knows where that data ends up?

3. **Credit Inquiries and Their Impact**: Each time you apply for credit, it affects your credit score. This is known as a hard inquiry and can temporarily lower your score, typically by a few points. While this effect is typically short-lived, frequent applications can start to take a toll and signal to other potential lenders that you might be overextending yourself financially.

4. **No Intentions of Offering Credit?** This is based on my experience, and it isn’t just me – many others who received the email have reported similar results. If, at the end of the day, you don’t qualify despite having positive credit standing, the question arises – why was the offer made in the first place? Is the point to generate interest without the intent to provide credit?

#### The Verdict: A Waste of Time and a Hit to Your Credit Score

In sum, the PayPal credit offer seems more like a mechanism to gather detailed consumer information for potential resale, without the goal of providing credit. Even if you opt out of providing some personal data, most applications require submitting information that can impact your credit score with a hard inquiry, even if you’re not approved for the credit ultimately. My advice? Think twice before pushing that “apply now” button. The risk of hard inquiries potentially lowering your score and the question marks surrounding the real intentions behind the application process do indeed make the whole ordeal seem like a waste of time. Protect your data, protect your credit, and maybe double-check the intentions behind such offers before proceeding.
