**When They Got to the Function Meme: Tracing the Evolution of This Viral Sensation**

Ever scrolled through social media and stumbled upon a meme with the phrase *“When the function got ___”*? This internet phenomenon has been a staple of meme culture for years, evolving in creative ways while staying rooted in its humorous, relatable core. Let’s unpack its origins, twists, and why it’s still going strong today.

### **The Original Spark: What Started It All**
The meme first emerged in **February 2021**, with a simple yet effective setup. Users began using the phrase *“When the function got Hennessy”* (often spelled H-E-N-N-E-S-S-Y on purpose) paired with an image of people celebrating. The term “Hennessy” became a stand-in for anything that elevates the vibe—like a fancy drink or a moment of excess. The meme’s genius lay in its simplicity: it invited users to swap “Hennessy” with other items to create absurd or exaggerated scenarios. Examples included *“When the function got WiFi”* or *“When the function got snacks”*.

This template quickly went viral, sparking a trend of “what happens when [item] shows up?” humor.

### **White People at the Function: The First Major Spin-Off**
By **July 2022**, the meme had spawned a notable subversion: *“White People at the Function.”* This version played on cultural stereotypes for comedic effect, imagining Caucasians overjoyed about mundane or unexpected items at a social gathering. For example:
– *“White people at the function when the venue had free parking.”*
– *“White people at the function when there was a cheese board.”*

The humor centered around poking fun at perceived over-reactions to “luxuries” or minor conveniences. While some found it lighthearted, others debated its sensitivity, which is a common conversation around many meme formats.

### **The Next Evolution: “There Will Be X at the Function”**
In **January 2024**, another iteration emerged: *“There Will Be X At The Function.”* This format shifted the focus from participants’ reactions to the *certainty* of a specific item showing up. For instance:
– *“There will be kale at the function.”*
– *“There will be avocado toast at the function.”*

The tone became more of a resigned or ironic statement, reflecting how certain items (or trends) seem inescapable in certain social circles. It’s a clever twist that keeps the meme fresh while inviting fresh creativity.
