Earlier this year, I booked a holiday with TUI using my Paypal credit. I paid off the balance inside the four-month interest-free period, feeling smug about my financial discipline. However, the holidays did not go as planned, with TUI cancelling my trip in the wake of the global pandemic. After several phone calls and what seemed an eternity of waiting, TUI finally refunded the holiday cost back to my Paypal credit account. Simple, right? Not quite.
The issue at hand is that the refunded money is available within my PayPal credit balance and to my dismay, it appears I can only use it to spend online. Yet, I do not wish to shop, I need to pay my bills. This situation is a common pain point for many customers and it’s time to clear the fog around it.
So, what’s the deal with the money in your PayPal credit account?
PayPal credit was designed to facilitate online shopping by offering an interest-free period to its clients. When a refund happens for a purchase made with PayPal credit, the refund amount is credited to your PayPal credit account, meaning the funds are there, ready to be spent. Ideally, if you had another purchase pending, it would be perfect.
But in my case, having the refund sitting idly in my account, unseen, unspent, and not accessible for immediate cash use? Not ideal. Here lies the frustration for folks like me who need the physical cash in our bank account for everyday utilities and expenses.
Converting Your PayPal Credit Balance into Available Cash
If you’re looking to convert your PayPal credit balance into cash to make bank transfers, direct payments, or simply get the money to your bank account, the process is a little intricate but not impossible.
1. **Pay Your Own Bill**: One method is to use the PayPal credit to pay off your own personal bill. So you can use the refunded money to pay off a portion (or all) of your PayPal credit balance, which will reduce your overall credit statement and free up the amount in your bank account. Of course, this works under the circumstances where you can manage without the credit for the moment.
2. **Pay Stub Method (Not Advised)**: There are tricks like processing your own payment invoice (a so-called ‘pay stub’ technique). However, note this method can be risky and might violate your PayPal Credit’s terms of service. I don’t advise it.
3. **Direct Refund Request to PayPal**: Sometimes, all it takes is a word to the wiser, or rather, to the customer service team. You can contact PayPal customer support and request to have the refund directly transferred to your bank account instead of back to your credit account. They might need some time and patience from you, but it’s worth a try.
4. **Upgrade to PayPal Balance**: In some cases, if you manage to do a balance transfer from your PayPal credit account into your PayPal balance (the portion of your PayPal account for regular funds, not credit), you might gain the flexibility to transfer it to your bank account. Not everybody has access to this feature, so it’s a hit or miss approach.
Moving your refund into your bank account requires being proactive and understanding a bit more about the way PayPal and credit balance management work. Communication with PayPal’s customer service team is key; they can provide specific solutions and guidance based on your situation.
Always remember that financial products that offer temporary credit and interest-free periods often come with their own set of rules and restrictions. It is important to keep updated with the policies and methods of your financial services, so what is a solution works for you and aligns with your requirements and limits set by the service provider.

If all fails, keep up the fight, keep communicating with the service provider. After all, our holidays may be on hold, but our bills won’t be.
