X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system, leading to severe symptoms and potentially life-threatening complications. Symptoms of ALD can vary widely, but common early signs include problems with cognitive processing, coordination, and balance. As the condition progresses, affected individuals may experience vision and hearing loss, muscle weakness, and even seizures. Physical disability and cognitive decline can occur rapidly, and unfortunately, ALD often leads to premature death. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), the median life expectancy for males with ALD is around 10 years after initial symptoms appear.

While there is currently no cure for ALD, researchers are exploring various treatment options to slow the progression of the disease. One promising area of research involves bone marrow transplantation, which has been shown to halt or slow the progression of ALD in some patients. Additionally, researchers are investigating the potential therapeutic benefits of gene therapy, including the use of viral vectors to deliver healthy copies of the ABCD1 gene to affected neurons.
