Retention on a personal transfert

**Blog post : What to do when PayPal retains funds on a personal transfer ?**

Imagine that you made a personal transfer between your accounts, and that PayPal has unexpectedly held a significant amount of money. That is what happened to a reader who had to deal with a 3.25% retention on a 100€ transfer.

The user tried to dispute the retention twice, but got rejected every time. The reasons given by PayPal are pretty much the same: unknown additional fees, shipping fees for a transaction without an item, and currency exchange since both users live in Spain with Spanish bank accounts.

But on closer inspection, these excuses are a bit suspicious. What additional fees can you anticipate with a normal transfer? What are the shipping fees for a transfer that is not a purchase? And if both users live in Spain with the same currency, is the exchange rate not a valid reason to retain money?

One way to deal with this issue is to first verify if it is indeed possible to contact PayPal customer service before it escalates. Trying out different channels, talking to other users or reaching out to your bank might also help clarify the issue.

But if things get too frustrating, don’t hesitate to look deeper into alternative options. There are other platforms available that can make your transfers without retentions.
