### Removing an Old Credit Card from a Closed PayPal Account

Hello everyone! Today’s blog post is aimed at solving a little frustration that many of us have experienced. Specifically, how to properly remove a credit card from a closed PayPal account when it’s still linked and causing issues with a new account.

#### The Problem

Last week, I decided to close a PayPal account I had been using for years, but didn’t realize that I had forgotten to remove my credit card from it. In my excitement to open a new PayPal account, I added my credit card to it. However, PayPal promptly informed me that my card was already linked to another PayPal account, thus preventing me from adding it via the usual method.

#### PayPal’s Error Message

The specific message I received was quite clear: “This card is linked to another PayPal account. Please remove the card from the other account or try a different payment method.”

While I understood the issue, solving it wasn’t as straightforward. After closing the old account, getting rid of the old credit card linked to it became a cumbersome process.

#### Attempting Resolution

I immediately reached out to PayPal’s Help Center through their messaging service. Unfortunately, despite sending multiple messages over the past few days, I had yet to receive a response.

#### Steps to Removal

So, what can you do in this situation? Here’s a step-by-step guide that might help you:

1. **Check the Closed Account**: If you haven’t already, make sure you’ve logged into your old PayPal account (if you can still access it). Click on the “Accounts” section, find the linked credit card, and try to remove it from there. Since you’ve closed the account, it’s possible this may not work or be possible, but it’s worth a try.

2. **Contact PayPal’s Support**: If you can’t access the old account, reaching out to PayPal support is your next best option. While you mentioned already contacting them, ensure your correspondence includes enough details, such as account numbers, a clear description of the issue, and any account creation date if possible.

3. **Check for a Payment Hold or Pending Actions**: Sometimes, even after closing an account, there might be pending transactions, payments on hold, or some unresolved issues that prevent the card from being fully removed. Check your account statements for any such issues.

4. **Secondary Verification Measures**: PayPal might also be requiring you to provide secondary verification if the account contains financial information linked to your card. This could include providing bank statements, a photo ID, or perhaps undergoing some other form of identity verification process.

5. **Legal Advice**: If the issue persists and PayPal’s support seems unresponsive, it might be necessary to seek legal advice. There’s a slight chance your old PayPal account could be involved in some unresolved disputes or legal issues, especially if the account has been inactive for a while.

#### Conclusion

While dealing with the issue yourself can be time-consuming and potentially stressful, being methodical about it is key. Unfortunately, removing a card from a closed PayPal account can sometimes be more complicated than expected. The most important thing is to stay persistent and provide PayPal with as much information as you can.

If you have any experiences with linking or unlinking credit cards from PayPal, or if you’ve had to deal with similar issues, please share below! We can all learn from each other’s experiences.

Happy blogging!
