Getting payments from a foreign source

### Getting Payments from a Foreign Source: Selling Art Abroad and Navigating Payment Fees

Artists around the world are increasingly finding themselves in my shoes, exploring the boundaries of an ever-globalizing market. Recently, I received news that would have been music to any artist’s ears: interest from a buyer in Germany for one of my paintings! The price? $1400 — not a small sum by any means, but it felt like a validation of my work. However, there was a catch: the steep PayPal fees of $400 for international transactions. For a young artist not yet living off their artwork alone, these fees can sting. This scenario prompted me into a deeper dive into the world of international payment alternatives, leading to this quest to save hard-earned money and streamline transactions.

#### Wise (formerly TransferWise)

One of the first alternatives I found was Wise. This platform is often praised for its competitive exchange rates and low transfer fees, meaning I could expect to pocket a larger percentage of the sale. With their focus on keeping costs low, Wise presents an attractive option compared to the bite taken by PayPal fees.

#### Payoneer

Another alternative well-regarded among freelancers and international businesses is Payoneer. Their system not only offers multiple payment options but also tends to have lower fees for international transactions. This could be a strong contender if PayPal’s charges continue to present a hindrance.

#### Bank Wire Transfers

When thinking about traditional banks, the typical transaction fees can actually be higher than not only PayPal but also alternatives like Wise and Payoneer. However, every bank is different. Some, especially those used to handling significant international transactions, might offer special rates if you have an established account with them. This would be worth checking into as a low-cost option, particularly if you engage in a lot of international transactions.

#### Cryptocurrency

If you are up for a bit more risk, you could explore
