Always choose worst currency exchange

### Why PayPal Is Making Me Use Its Own Worst Currency Exchange Rates

As a frequent user of PayPal, I’ve encountered a frustrating issue that I believe others might also experience. I have some DKK (Danish Krone) and EUR (Euro) in my PayPal account, which I decided to spend. Little did I know that my intentions would be thwarted by PayPal’s default behavior.

I made 9 transactions before I noticed something odd: PayPal wasn’t using the currency I chose for the transactions. Instead, it deducted money from my credit card and instantly converted it at PayPal’s own exchange rate, bypassing the bank’s rate I had set as default. This is incredibly annoying because PayPal’s exchange rate is notoriously poor compared to banks.

I can’t find any explanation in PayPal’s settings or documentation for why this is happening. Even more frustrating is that there seems to be no way to deactivate this behavior. I dug into my past orders, and I noticed a pattern: whenever a payment was made in NOK (Norwegian Krone), which is my local currency, PayPal used the foreign currencies in my wallet and converted them to NOK at its own unfavorable rate.

I have always been very cautious about selecting the payment method, ensuring that I choose the most beneficial one for my transactions. But I can’t believe I made a mistake 11 times out of 11. There must be a logical reason for this, but PayPal isn’t making it easy to figure out.

### PayPal’s Exchange Rate Woes

It seems that PayPal’s algorithms decide, often arbitrarily, when to use the wallet versus the credit card for transactions. This behavior is not only frustrating but can be financially damaging, especially for frequent international shoppers like me.

I’ve tried to find a solution to this issue, hoping there was a setting I could toggle off, but to no avail. It feels like PayPal is prioritizing their own profits over the convenience and financial well-being of their users. While I appreciate the ease of using PayPal for transactions, this hidden behavior is a major drawback.

### Solutions and Advice

If you’re also experiencing this issue, here are a few things you can try:

1. **Direct Contact**: Reach out to PayPal’s customer support directly. Sometimes, they can provide specific guidance or temporary workarounds.
2. **Selective Wallet Use**: Be extra careful when making transactions. If you must use PayPal, try to keep as little money in your wallet as possible to minimize the chance of unwanted conversions.
3. **Alternative Payment Methods**: Consider using another payment method that doesn’t have this hidden behavior. There are plenty of secure and reliable alternatives.

I’m hoping that my experience will help others avoid the same frustration and possibly inspire PayPal to change its policies. Until then, stay vigilant and keep your fingers crossed!

If you have any insights or solutions to this issue, please share them in the comments. Let’s all work together to shed some light on this hidden problem.
