Can Acorns Roundups be Used with a PayPal Cashback Mastercard?

For those of you who are investing enthusiasts, especially those exploring micro-investing, the Acorns platform is a popular choice. Acorns allows users to save small amounts, such as spare change from daily purchases, by utilizing the ‘Roundup’ feature, which rounds up your transactions and invests the difference. This method of saving trivial amounts has made investing more accessible for many individuals.

However, a common question arises: can one use the Roundup feature when transactions are made on a Paypal Cashback Mastercard? My research led me to the conclusion that integrating Acorns’ Roundup functionality with the PayPal Cashback Mastercard is not directly supported as of today. The Acorns Roundup feature is built around linking a debit or credit card directly for the roundups to be calculated and invested back into your Acorns portfolio. Since the PayPal Cashback Mastercard is a prepaid card, the transaction mechanics involved don’t align seamlessly with Acorns’ service as they do with traditional credit or debit cards.

Furthermore, I reached out to both PayPal and Acorns for clarification. Neither PayPal nor Acorns have announced any intentions to integrate the Roundup feature onto prepaid cards such as the PayPal Cashback Mastercard. Synchrony Bank, which partners with PayPal to offer the Mastercard, does not currently provide the necessary infrastructure for third-party investment apps like Acorns to implement their roundups process onto the card.

Nonetheless, if you’re keen on using both the PayPal Cashback Mastercard and investing, you can manually move funds from your PayPal account to your Acorns investment portfolios. This manual approach, although it might lack the simplicity and automation of the Roundup feature, still provides the option for you to continue benefiting from both the cashback of the PayPal card and the investing services of Acorns.

In short, while utilizing the Acorns Roundup feature directly with the PayPal Cashback Mastercard isn’t an option at this time, it’s possible to maintain both services within your financial routine by engaging in a bit of financial juggling. Keep an eye on Acorns’ and PayPal’s announcements and product updates for any future features that may bridge this gap.
