Supergiants develop when massive main-sequence stars run out of hydrogen in their cores, at which point they start to expand, just like lower-mass stars. Unlike lower-mass stars, however, they begin to fuse helium in the core smoothly and not long after exhausting their hydrogen. This means that they do not increase their luminosity as dramatically as lower-mass stars, and they progress nearly horizontally across the HR diagram to become red supergiants. Also unlike lower-mass …https://www.thoughtco.com/stars-and-the-main-sequence-3073594Life on the Main Sequence: How Stars Evolve

Leaving the Main Sequence . When stars run out of hydrogen, they begin to fuse helium in their cores. This is when they leave the main sequence. High-mass stars become red supergiants, and then evolve to become blue supergiants. It’s fusing helium into carbon and oxygen. Then, it begins to fuse those into neon and so on. Basically, the star becomes a chemical creation factory, with fusion occurring not just in the core, but in layers surrounding the core.https://courses.lumenlearning.com/astronomy/chapter/evolution-from-the-main-sequence-to-red-giants/Evolution from the Main Sequence to Red Giants | Astronomy

More massive stars complete each stage of evolution more quickly than lower-mass stars. The fusion of hydrogen to form helium changes the interior composition of a star, which in turn results in changes in its temperature, luminosity, and radius. Eventually, as stars age, they evolve away from the main sequence to become red giants or supergiants. The core of a red giant is contracting, but the outer layers are expanding as a result of hydrogen fusion in a shell outside the core. The star …https://users.physics.unc.edu/~gcsloan/fun/star.htmlG. Main sequence stars become red giants do to a change in hydrostatic equilibrium. When a star is in hydrostatic equilibrium, the outward pressure of the nuclear reactions and the inward force of the star’s own gravity. When the star runs out of fuel, it contracts. This brings fuel from the outer layers of the star into the core where it is fused, causing massive amounts of outward pressure that expands the star into a cool, red giant.https://phys.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Astronomy__Cosmology/Book:_Astronomy_(OpenStax)/22:_Stars_from_Adolescence_to_Old_Age/22.01:_Evolution_from_the_Main_Sequence_to_Red_Giants22.1: Evolution from the Main Sequence to Red Giants …

The massive main-sequence stars which turn into supergiants–do they typically have special terminology for their classifications as do the less massive ones (which may be, e.g., yellow dwarf or red dwarf)? Just non-dwarf main sequence or? (I’m quite a novice, so pardon me if my premises are wrong too. Just trying to get a sense of some of the broad categories.)
