I confirmed this by substituting each value in the equation to see if the 2 sides are equal. In both cases, the 2 sides are unequal. Here’s correct solution: 1) Combine like terms on right side: 3x-12 = 5x+2. 2) Subtract 3x from both sides: -12 = 2x + 2. 3) Subtract 2 from both sides: -14 = 2x. 4) Divide both sides by 2: -7 = x. Checking solution:
Intro to Combining Like Terms
The first thing I usually do is rearrange the numbers so that all the like terms or numbers that can be added together, are next to each other, like this: -n + 3n + (-3) +5. Then you can rearrange it some more to make it clear how to combine the like terms. 3n-n + 5-3. 2n + 2.
Combining Like Terms
The like terms can be combined. That is, the terms with the same power can be combined. I’ll write it with parenthesis first to show which ones can be combined. (-1x^4 – 5x^4) + (-7x^3 + 2x^3) + (- 8x^2 – 6x^2) which when the like terms are combined becomes. – 6x^4 – 5x^3 – 14x^2. I hope that helps answer your question.

By convention, terms are often written in descending order based on power. Combine the like terms, be it by adding, subtracting, etc. Being able to combine like terms is a fundamental aspect of algebra that allows us to solve algebraic equations. Below are a few other examples of combining like terms in expressions as well as equations.

24 oct. 2022Example 4. Use the distributive property to combine like terms (if possible) in each of the following expressions: (a) −5 x2 − 9 x2, (b) −5 ab + 7 ab, (c) 4 y3 − 7 y2, and (d) 3 xy2 − 7 xy2. Solution. If the terms are like terms, you can use the distributive property to factor out the common variable part.

These terms are like terms, and are combined by adding their coefficients, to get 3x. Take your time, and make sure you are keeping straight in your head how multiplication works, versus how addition works. In fact, combining like terms is a topic for which it would be difficult to do too much practice.
