Why is the collector very lightly doped in a bipolar junction transistor?
Many websites and courses list the doping profile of a BJT as emitter heavily doped, base lightly doped and collector moderately doped. However, the more reputable sources and textbooks like Semiconductor Physics and Devices by Donald A. Neamen state that the collector is the doped the lightest of all, introducing a lot of confusion.
Reason for a thin base
$begingroup$ Your last paragraph probably needs some modifications. It is difficult to understand what you mean by the first sentence as to why the base has to be wide enough. You cannot make the base of a transistor arbitrarily thin because you have to avoid the the so-called punch-through, where the depletion zones of emitter-base and base-collector junctions touch, which ends the …
Why is the collector region doped?
If the collector is not doped the resistance is lower. @pauk no, undoped silicon is (effectively) an insulator. If the collector wasn’t doped the transistor wouldn’t work. Typically the base is more heavliy doped than the collector, and I wouldnt consider the base slightly doped, its more into moderate territory.

Why the base of transistor is thin and lightly doped
Il y a 6 joursSo output current ( collector current ) is reduced. Because of this reason base is lightly doped. Thus, more current passing to the collector side or an output side. Also, we know only 5 % of emitter current transfer to base and 95 % current passing to the collector. Base region doping of the one of the major factors in deciding …

Bipolar Junction Transistor – Engineering LibreTexts
The transistor is not symmetrical due to the different doping ratios of the emitter, collector and base regions. The base region consists of a lightly doped materials that exhibits high resistivity. The base is located between the heavily doped emitter region and the lightly doped collector region.

Why is the base of a transistor made thin and is lightly doped? – Toppr
Well, the base is thin so a transistor can conduct above cut-in voltage with little recombination occurrence at the base. That is the essential function of a transistor, short for transfer resistor. We know same charge opposes and opposite charge attracts each other. If we make Base highly doped, it will become barrier for electrons or holes …

The emitter is very heavily doped, and the base is very, very thin and very lightly doped. The collector is moderately doped. We have two voltage sources, one having a significantly greater voltage than the other. … transistors typically have a base that is short with respect to the diffusion length, implying that recombination in the …

Transistor Explained- How Transistors Work – The Engineering Mindset
In a NPN transistor, we have two layers of N-type material, so we have two junctions and therefore two barriers. So, no current can flow through it ordinarily. The emitter N-type material is heavily doped, so there are a lot of excess electrons here. The base P-type is lightly doped so there are a few holes here.

The base has a normal P-dopant level. The base is much thinner than the not-to-scale cross-section shows. The collector is lightly doped as indicated by the N- notation. The collector needs to be lightly doped so that the collector-base junction will have a high breakdown voltage. This translates into a high allowable collector power supply …

3. Base – It is the middle section of the transistor and is very lightly doped to reduce the recombination within the base so as to increase collector current and is very thin (of the order of μm) in comparison to either emitter or collector so that it may pass most of the injected charge carriers to the collector.. Base forms two junctions i.e., emitter junction and collector junction …

Why is the base of a transistor made thin and is lightly doped …
Solution. The base of a transistor is lightly doped than the emitter and narrowed so that almost all electrons injected from the emitter (in a n-p-n transistor) diffuse right across the base to the collector junction without recombining with holes. In other words, the base width is kept smaller than the recombination distance.

Bipolar junction transistor – Wikipedia
The heavy doping of the emitter region and light doping of the base region causes many more electrons to be injected from the emitter into the base than holes to be injected from the base into the emitter. A thin and lightly doped base region means that most of the minority carriers that are injected into the will diffuse to the collector …
