How to Use Tea Bags to Help Cure Styes – Stye Treatment
If you do decide to use tea bag stye remedies, follow these steps for maximum results: Take a tea bag, soak it in warm water then take out the bag. Let the tea bag cool off a bit (you don’t want it too hot), then gently place it on the eyelids. Let the tea bag stay on your eyelids for awhile to get relief from the itching and pain.
Lancing a Stye Or Chalazion
Recurring styes: if you attempt to lance a stye yourself, you risk spreading an infection to other defective glands, this can produce new styes to arise or recurrent styes. Do not attempt to lance a stye at home, this procedure should be conducted by a qualified ophthalmologist or physician to avoid permanent eye damage.
Signs and Symptoms
Styes also arise due to inflammatory eyelid disease such as blepharitis. There are approximately 20 to 40 meibomian glands in each eyelid. The meibomian glands function is to secret oil, which then mixes with our tears and prevents tear evaporation. A stye occurs when one of these oil glands becomes infected and subsequently blocked.
Stye Causes
Cleanliness is key in maintaining eyelid health and preventing styes. The bacterium staphylococcus resides normally on the skin. When these microorganisms enter a mucous membrane or eyelid gland, it causes a pus formation. By rubbing your eyes with unwashed hands, you risk transferring the microscopic organisms to your eyelids.
Hot Compress to Rid a Stye
A warm compress is the quickest way to eliminate a stye—without prescription drugs. A stye is an inflamed swelling of the eyelid that resembles a pimple or boil. The red, painful lump forms when an oil gland in the eyelid becomes blocked. Without treatment, styes usually clear within 7 to 14 days, but sometimes faster.
Stye Prognosis
Stye prognosis improves with medication or a series of treatments, but styes often recur. Most styes heal on their own by rupturing within one or two weeks, and rarely cause complications or damage to the eye. However, if a stye does not heal after 14 days, seek a doctors opinion. Stye prognosis worsens when one attempts to lance or pop the stye.
Warm Compress for Styes
Use a warm compress up to 2-3 times per day, or as needed to help reduce swelling and provide healing for styes. For recurring styes or styes lasting more than 2-3 days, it is recommended to see a doctor. He or she may be able to guide you to other methods you can use in addition to warm compress for your stye or pinpoint what is causing them.
