Total internal reflection (TIR) is the phenomenon that involves the reflection of all the incident light off the boundary. TIR only takes place when both of the following two conditions are met: the light is in the more dense medium and approaching the less dense medium. the angle of incidence is greater than the so-called critical angle.

Total internal reflection occurs for any incident angle greater than the critical angle θc, and it can only occur when the second medium has an index of refraction less than the first. Note the above equation is written for a light ray that travels in medium 1 and reflects from medium 2, as shown in the figure. Example 1.

In general, total internal reflection takes place at the boundary between two transparent media when a ray of light in a medium of higher index of refraction approaches the other medium at an angle of incidence greater than the critical angle. For a water-air surface the critical angle is 48.5°.

Total Internal Reflection An interesting effect known as total internal reflection can occur when light attempts to move from a medium having a given refractive index to a medium having a lower refractive index. Suppose that light crosses an interface from medium 1 to medium 2, where. According to Snell’s law,
