John Locke, the individual, and the origin of communication
Abstract. Communication is a product of a particular historical epoch and set of social conditions. The concept emerges in classic liberalism and presupposes a society in which individuals are thought of as free from external constraints of society, others, history, and language, and are seen as holders of private property in both material goods and consciousness.

It thus tells us in some detail what one can legitimately claim to know and what one cannot.

4 Consciousness in Locke’s Theory of Personal Identity – Oxford Academic
Abstract. How Locke understands consciousness as the criterion for personal identity is the subject of chapter 4. Locke’s theory of personal identity was revolutionary for its reliance on a psychological criterion, yet it has suffered harsh criticism that it fails logical transitivity, invites circularity, and is insufficient for his theological and moral commitments.

Locke claims that we have the ideas of but three sorts of substances: God, finite intelligences and bodies. He goes on to distinguish and explain the difference between the identity of a single atom, masses of atoms and living things. Each individual atom is the same at a time, and stays the same over time.

Meaning and Communication – JSTOR
MEANING AND COMMUNICATION. O NE of the great uses of language is to communicate. Some philosophers, notably John Locke, have seen this use of language as the clue to an analysis of the notion of linguistic meaning. Locke’s analysis does not go very far and it contains definite mistakes. But I its central contention may be correct.

John Locke’s Empiricism: Why We Are All Tabula Rasas (Blank Slates)
John Locke, as perceived by your senses. In his brilliant 1689 work An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, Locke argues that, at birth, the mind is a tabula rasa (a blank slate) that we fill with ‘ideas’ as we experience the world through the five senses.
