#1 Hello again, everyone. I have a quick question. I was taught that in a question or negative sentence, we should always use anywhere. For instance, Have you been anywhere in Asia? I can’t seem to find my book anywhere . However, I am also aware of how I tend to hear Have you seen my book ?

Many – as evidenced by the most popular answer – flatly say never. Others appear game to explore the idea, and there are some interesting answers that do indeed address my question. I’ve chosen what I myself perceive as a fairly crass example (at least in my own speech community), one that seems to divide the educated from the uneducated.

5,918 28 79 140 I think I saw you! sounds better when I imagined that the child saw you at first, then somehow move yourself out of the child’s eyesight, and then you tapped the child. However, I believe that I’ve seen you could also be used too, e.g. I’ve seen you first!

The present perfect (Have you seen this) suggests a link with the present time. If this is something you could have seen but cannot anymore (you should have been there seeing this at the time, but it wouldn’t have the same impact if you see it again now), then Did you see is more appropriate.

As Robusto says, somewhere is a location within a defined category (Somewhere at home, Somewhere in the city, Somewhere on Earth). Anywhere is any location (Have you seen my watch anywhere?, I can’t find it anywhere, Anywhere is fine by me). They can be used interchangeably, but only in some instances.

To me, ‘having seen him’ pertains more to the distant past. Like ‘I remember having seen him at the carnival’ . And ‘seeing him’ pertains more to the recent past like ‘I remember seeing him at the supershop yesterday’. ‘Having seen him’ sounds more formal while ‘seeing him’ sounds more colloquial. But maybe that’s just me.
