Economic returns to education: What We Know, What We Don’t Know, and Where We Are Going—Some brief pointers☆
We consider briefly the current trends in the literature on economic returns to education including econometric issues. We argue that the concept of the return to education should include non-monetary returns. We consider how research interests and the focus of policymakers may be at odds. We conclude with some suggestions for future res…
A Review of Estimates of The Schooling/Earnings Relationship, With Tests for Publication Bias
Hedges (1992), in a review of over seven hundred studies on the effectiveness of aptitude tests as a predictor of employment outcomes, proposes a formal model of publication bias based on the assumption that there is a weight function (based on outcome p-values) that determines the probability a study is observed.Full details of this weight function are outlined in Appendix A of this paper but …
Differences by Degree
Research highlights High returns for women in all subjects and for Law, Economics/Management for men. Degree class and postgraduate study has large effects in all subjects. A large rise in tuition fees has only a modest impact on relative returns. Even a large rise in tuition fees makes little difference to the investment. The effect of fee rises is dwarfed by existing cross subject …
Earnings Returns to The British Education Expansion
Highlights We study the UK education expansion that affected cohorts born from 1970 to 1975. We find that the expansion caused people to increase education by about a year. Post-expansion cohorts achieved about 8% higher wages as a result. This is a large gain from being born late enough to take advantage of the expansion. The instrumental variables estimates of returns to schooling are about 6%.
Parental Education, Grade Attainment and Earnings Expectations Among University Students
1. Introduction. The intergenerational transmission of education and income is a key concern of education economists and policymakers, with a substantial body of literature demonstrating high correlations between parental education and child education (Black and Devereux, 2010, Ermisch and Del Bono, 2010, Machin and Murphy, 2010).For example, the elasticity of child education with respect to …
Are There Civic Returns to Education
The plausible existence of such unobservables implies that conventionally estimated correlations may spuriously overstate the true civic returns to education. 2 This study attempts to construct less ambiguous empirical evidence on this policy-relevant issue by identifying the causal effects of additional schooling on civic behaviors and knowledge.
Evidence From Florida
Policy-makers are often perceived as setting standards that are too low. Moreover, economic models suggest this perception may be correct. 2 Yet these models are static, in the sense that they consider a set of students that face a particular standard. In practice, students can drop out of education before they have to face the standard.

An added benefit is the increase in job opportunities for those with more education: The unemployment rate for those with a bachelor’s degree is 4.1 percentage points lower than for those with only a high school diploma (see the first graph). Of course, higher education is expensive.

Social and Economic Returns to College Education in the United States
Education correlates strongly with most important social and economic outcomes such as economic success, health, family stability, and social connections. Theories of stratification and selection created doubts about whether education actually caused good things to happen. Because schools and colleges select who continues and who does not, it was easy to imagine that added little of …

1 – What should you know about the private returns to education?
The basic human capital model of schooling envisages two options: (1) go to school for s years and earn an income Y s every year after leaving school, or (2) go to work right away and earn annual income Y0 (see figure 1.1). This makes the choice for schooling an investment problem.
