Rift Valley – National Geographic Society
4 janv. 2024Many rift valleys are part of triple junctions , a type of divergent boundary where three tectonic plates meet at about 120° angles. Two arms of the triple junction can split to form an entire ocean. The third, failed rift or aulacogen, may become a rift valley.

Ocean Trench
In particular, ocean trenches are a feature of convergent plate boundaries, where two or more tectonic plates meet. At many convergent plate boundaries, dense litho sphere melts or slides beneath less-dense lithosphere in a process called subduction, creating a trench. Ocean trenches occupy the deepest layer of the ocean, the hadalpelagic zone.

In the western part of the continent, divergent plate boundary forces are beginning to rip the continent apart, forming the Basin and Range Province and its adjacent eastern arm, known as the Rio Grande Rift.

Convergent Plate Boundaries—Collisional Mountain Ranges
The resulting continental rift zone was much like today’s Basin and Range Province, with long mountain ranges separated by down-dropped valleys. Sedimentary and volcanic layers that were deposited in the rift valleys are exposed in Shenandoah National Park and along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Spreading-plate boundaries do not only (although mostly) exist in the oceans, but on continents as well. After all, this process is believed to have separated the continents in the remote past of the earth.

Plate Boundaries – National Geographic Society
29 nov. 2023When subduction occurs, a chain of volcanoes often develops near the convergent plate boundary. One such chain of volcanoes can be found on the western coast of the United States, spanning across the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. A divergent plate boundary often forms a mountain chain known as a ridge.

At divergent boundaries, sometimes called constructive boundaries, lithospheric plates move away from each other. There are two types of divergent boundaries, categorized by where they occur: continental rift zones and mid-ocean ridges. Continental rift zones occur in weak spots in the continental lithospheric plate.

When a series of mantle plumes exists beneath a large continent, the resulting rifts may align and lead to the formation of a rift valley (such as the present-day Great Rift Valley in eastern Africa). lesoutrali bot
