Local Housing Allowance – Brentwood Borough Council
- Listed: 15 March 2022 3 h 10 min
Description
You can get help with private renting costs or help with the rent for your council home. This change means that Council and Housing Association tenants of working age who have more bedrooms than the Government decides they need will have their Housing Benefit reduced. We may check some of the information with other sources within the council, the Valuation Office Agency, other councils and government agencies, such as The Department for Work and Pensions, HM Revenues and Customs and the Home Office. If you rent privately, we use Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates to work out Housing Benefit. Find out more about reporting changes that affect your Universal Credit. If you are entitled to extended payments, we will award you 4 weeks Housing Benefit at the same rate you were entitled to before you started work.
Universal Credit is payable to people who are of working age. If you are of working age you should now apply for help with your rent as part of your Universal Credit claim. If you do not fall into one of the above categories and need help with your housing costs, you should make an application for Universal Credit. If we need further information to support your claim we will contact you, please ensure we have a contact number on your claim form. If you save your details part way through, you will be given a Citizen Access Benefits key code – https://www.behance.net/search/projects/?sort=appreciations&time=week&search=key%20code. You can save your application at various stages and finish it later. You can claim Housing Benefit if your asylum application has succeeded. You should tell the DWP if you move in with or split up with your partner – your next payment will be different. For example, you’ll get both elements if you’re eligible for the sick or disability element and your partner is eligible for the carer element. If you already get the Universal Credit Housing Costs Element, you can still apply to the council for a Discretionary Housing Payment if you need further help with your rent.
If you live in supported accommodation and receive Universal Credit, you can still receive Housing Benefit from us to help me find a landlord – https://www.leaseforlife.co.uk/register with your rent. You’ll still get a child element for a qualifying young person. The Savings Credit element is only payable to people who reached retirement age before April 2016. The Guarantee Credit element is available to people classified as being state pension age (or in couples, where the younger member of the couple has reached state pension age). Single pensioners and couples, where both are pensioners, should continue to claim Housing Benefit as normal. Existing Housing Benefit claimants should carry on claiming as normal. Payments of Private Housing Benefit are usually made by bank transfer (BACS). The council has no discretion whether or not to apply the cap. Read more information on the Benefit Cap including who it does and does not affect.
Discretionary housing payments are a grant assistance scheme to help people who already receive help with their rent due to being on a low income to cover any further shortfall in their rent, on a short term basis if they are temporarily experiencing financial hardship. Find out who can claim. If it takes longer for the DWP to decide, they’ll backdate your payment so you don’t lose out. If you are having difficulty paying the housing benefit overpayment, don’t ignore it; contact us. If you think you are not receiving the entitlements and should be, please contact us. You cannot register to manage your Council Tax online until you are registered for Council Tax at your address. If you do not qualify for Council Tax Reduction you may be able to get Second Adult Rebate instead. The calculator can be used to assess entitlement to housing benefit and council tax reduction. Many flats and single family houses come under council housing.
