General Trends among the Transition Metals – Chemistry LibreTexts
30 juin 2023Most compounds of transition metals are paramagnetic, whereas virtually all compounds of the p-block elements are diamagnetic. The electronegativities of the first-row transition metals increase smoothly from Sc (χ = 1.4) to Cu (χ = 1.9). Thus Sc is a rather active metal, whereas Cu is much less reactive.

Magnetic Properties of Transition Elements Detailed Explanation – BYJU’S
Most of the transition elements show paramagnetic behaviour. The unpaired electrons in (n-1) d orbitals are responsible for the magnetic properties. The paramagnetic character of the transition metals increases on moving from left to right as the number of unpaired electrons increases from one to five. The middle found to possess …

One explanation I read is that Hemoglobin without bound oxygen molecules, deoxyhemoglobin, is paramagnetic because of the high spin state (S = 2) of the heme iron. In contrast, oxygen-bound hemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin, has low spin (S = 0) and is diamagnetic (Pauling &Coryl 1936). I know the iron in heme is Fe2+. Thanks.

3.10: Magnetic Behavior of Atoms, Molecules, and Materials
More unpaired electrons increase the paramagnetic effects. The electron configuration of a transition metal (d-block) changes in a coordination compound; this is due to the repulsive forces between electrons in the ligands and electrons in the compound. Depending on the strength of the ligand, the compound may be or diamagnetic.

Transition Elements – HyperPhysics
The transition elements are those elements having a partially filled d or f subshell in any common oxidation state. The term transition elements most commonly refers to the d-block transition elements. The 2B elements zinc, cadmium and mercury do not strictly meet the defining properties, but are usually included with the …

v. t. e. In chemistry, a transition metal (or transition element) is a chemical element in the d-block of the periodic table (groups 3 to 12), though the elements of group 12 (and less often group 3) are sometimes excluded. The lanthanide and actinide elements (the f-block) are called inner transition metals and are sometimes considered to be …

Paramagnetism (Chapter 5) – Magnetic Materials
Many salts of transition elements are paramagnetic. In transition-metal salts, each transition-metal cation has a magnetic moment resulting from its partially filled d shell, and the anions ensure spatial separation between cations. Therefore the interactions between the magnetic moments on neighboring cations are weak. The rare-earth salts …

Paramagnetism – Wikipedia
Paramagnetism is a form of magnetism whereby some materials are weakly attracted by an externally applied magnetic field, and form internal, induced magnetic fields in the direction of the applied magnetic field. In contrast with this behavior, diamagnetic materials are repelled by magnetic fields and form induced magnetic fields in the direction opposite to that of the applied magnetic field.
