Description

Ebola jumps from animals to humans through contact with infected animals’ bodily fluids. Here’s a breakdown of the transmission:

  • Spillover Event: Scientists believe the initial jump happens when humans come into contact with animals harboring the virus, like fruit bats, chimpanzees, or forest antelope. This is called a spillover event.

  • Culprits: In some areas, hunting, handling, and consuming bushmeat (wild animals hunted for food) can be a transmission route.

  • Direct Contact: The key factor is direct contact with infected animals’ blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids. This can occur while handling sick or dead animals.

Ebola is primarily transmitted to humans through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals, such as fruit bats, chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, forest antelopes and porcupines found ill or dead or in the rainforest. It is also possible for a person to get infected by eating contaminated bushmeat, handling infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelopes or porcupines, or through contact with surfaces that have the virus on them.

Human-to-Human Transmission Once the Ebola virus has infected the first human, transmission of the virus from one human to another can occur through contact with the blood and body fluids of sick people or with the bodies of those who have died of Ebola.

This research has also revealed the dynamics of how the Ebola virus has been transmitted from human to human, and traces how the genetic code of the virus is changing over time to adapt to human hosts. Pardis Sabeti, M.D., Ph.D, a 2009 National Institutes of Health Director’s New Innovator awardee and her team carried out the research.
