What Is an Out and Back Trail? – Outdoor Motives

What Is an Out and Back Trail?

An out and back trail is a trail that goes from point A (generally the trailhead) to point B then back to point A along the same path. If the hiking trail is 2.5 miles, and it’s an out and back trail, then you know your total hike will be 5 miles.

A trail that switches back and forth can lead to inaccurate distances, as measured by GPS. If your location is recorded at intervals, it’s easy to get a shorter distance. If the GPS signal is off due to interference or other issues, it’s also possible to get an inaccurate distance. GPS (How it actually works)

Out and back is the same as total. The 10 mile trail might be 5 miles out and 5 miles back, for example. If you take a different route back, the numbers might not be the same. For example you might go out, around the base of something, up the far side, down the near side, then rejoin your original trail to come back to the trailhead.

Out-and-Back trails start and end at the same location and follow a single trail or multiple trails to an end point and then return along the same route. Point-to-Point trails start and end in different locations. These routes are often part of a multi-day hiking or backpacking trip or segments of a long distance trail such as the Appalachian …

The most accurate measurements are done with a measuring wheel which is rolled along the trail and has a revolution counter, frequently calibrated in feet or meters. I have modified my wheel to have a clipboard mounted on the handle for ease in recording data.

Loop vs. Out-and-Back: What’s your route type and why?

Out and back for me. Because I like to run on trails, and I run by distance, mostly. And I’m not geo-savvy enough to figure out loops through the park. So I go out for a bit, turn back and come back for a bit. Works for me. And I’m with you – I like to see how things look so different when you’re coming from the opposite direction.

Out-and-back: Sometimes called an in-and-out, these are simple trails that head to an endpoint but don’t loop back to the starting place. To return to the trailhead, hikers need to follow the same trail that they followed on the way out.

You could measure the theoretical hypotenuse, or measure side b, but then you’d have an average angle. The average on a consistent slope like Outer Limits at Killington is meaningful, but the average on a slope like Shay’s Revenge at Snowshoe — with a long lead in and run out — gives no indication of how steep the headwall is.
