If you want to toggle it back on just slide it back and the number returns. I just double checked it and it gets rid of that giant number. I think they brought that into IOS 2.

Easiest way to solve the issue is to get your son to sign out of your Apple ID in settings/messages, settings/facetime and settings/iCloud. Then get him to sign up to his own Apple ID in settings/iCloud and then use that Apple ID in settings/messages and settings/facetime. That should pretty much clear the issue.
