I’ve noticed that on job applications, tests, and other surveys/papers, that they ask you if you’re Hispanic/Latino or not. Why do they only ask if you’re Hispanic/Latino, but not Asian or African American or anything? When I filled in an application, and they asked me my race, this is what it looked like: Race: American Indian or Alaska Native (Not Hispanic or Latino) Asian (Not Hispanic or …

The reason that Hispanic is identified seperately from race on most forms has to do with the cultural and racial history of Central and South America. To understand that, you need to look at the ways in which colonialization affected the native populations of Central and South America, and how that affects racial divides in those areas today.

By the standards of the United States Census Bureau, Hispanic is not classified as a race, and many corporations follow those same standards. By the US census definition, you’re asked your race first, then you’re asked if you’re Hispanic, so you could therefore be White Hispanic, Black Hispanic, or even Asian Hispanic, or you could be multi-racial + Hispanic but you can’t be just Hispanic.

The reason it’s a separate question is because being Hispanic is considered an ethnicity, not a race, and EEOC guidelines (the government agency that determines these types of things) considers it separate.

The United States Census sees being Hispanic or Latino as a separate question than what race a person is. According to the Census, races are White – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. To answer your last edit they care if you’re Hispanic for the same reason they care about your race: they’re looking for statistical trends about whatever you’re filling out your form for. When you register for school, for instance, the administration wants to know what subgroup you’re a part of.

The comments I’m reading are pretty upsetting knowing what you’re all going through, but in a strange way I feel comfort because I feel for once like I’m not alone and I’m not crazy. I also realized there’s a lot of problems out there that I don’t worry about, and so I feel greatful.
