Stages of labor and birth: Baby, it’s time! – Mayo Clinic
Request Appointment Healthy Lifestyle Products and services Stages of labor and birth: Baby, it’s time! Labor is a natural process. Here’s what to expect during the three stages of labor and birth — and what you can do to promote comfort. By Mayo Clinic Staff Labor is a unique experience. Sometimes it’s over in a matter of hours.
Pain Medications
An epidural eases most pain in the lower body without slowing labor much. You remain awake and alert, but you still feel pressure and some stretching during delivery. The epidural’s effect on the baby is minimal to none. A combined spinal-epidural block relieves pain faster than a regular epidural and might use less medication.
Signs of Labor
The lower part of the uterus is called the cervix. Before labor, the cervix is typically 3.5 to 4 centimeters long. As labor begins, the cervix starts to soften, shorten and thin (efface). You might feel mild, irregular contractions or nothing at all. Effacement is often expressed in percentages.

Labor induction increases the risk that the uterine muscles won’t properly contract after giving birth (uterine atony). This can lead to serious bleeding after delivery. Occasionally blood products are needed for serious bleeding. Inducing labor is a serious decision. Work with your health care provider to make the best choice for you and your …
High-risk Pregnancy
You may know ahead of time that you’ll have a high-risk pregnancy. Or you might want to do what you can to prevent a high-risk pregnancy. Either way, take the following steps. Schedule an appointment before you get pregnant. If you’re thinking about becoming pregnant, make an appointment to see your healthcare professional.
Episiotomy
Share your thoughts about episiotomy with your health care provider during your prenatal visits and when labor begins. Remember, though, to go into labor with an open mind. It’ll take time for the baby to stretch the vaginal tissues to allow delivery. But sometimes the baby needs to be delivered before the vaginal tissues can stretch on their own.
