Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that, together with the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), provides health coverage to over 72.5 million Americans, including children, pregnant women, parents, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Benefits
States establish and administer their own Medicaid programs and determine the type, amount, duration, and scope of services within broad federal guidelines. Federal law requires states to provide certain mandatory benefits and allows states the choice of covering other optional benefits .
Cost Sharing
States have the option to charge premiums and to establish out of pocket spending (cost sharing) requirements for Medicaid enrollees. Maximum out of pocket costs are limited, but states can impose higher charges for targeted groups of somewhat higher income people.
