Immediately, a few red flags popped up. The most obvious one was the broken link in the email. When I tried to click on the embedded “action” link, it redirected to a non-secured site. As many of us familiar with phishing scams would know, this sort of redirection to unverified or unsecured links is a common tactic used to steal personal information.

Here are the reasons why I believe it is important to take a closer look at this email:

1. **Sense of Urgency**: The message is structured to instill a strong sense of urgency. It warns that your account could be at risk of losing some or all of its functionality. Scammers use such tactics to make us act quickly without taking the time to verify the authenticity of the email.

2. **Call for Action**: The email contains a direct call to action within an embedded link and it pressures the recipient to click and enter personal information. Scammers often use such links to direct victims to fake login pages or forms designed to collect login credentials and other sensitive data.

3. **Professional Language with Typos**: This email attempts to mimic the language of a genuine PayPal communication. However, careful scrutiny might reveal weak points, such as grammatical mistakes or slightly awkward phrasing, which could be missed at a glance but are common in scam emails.

4. **Mismatch in Sentiment and Verification Needs**: Verification requests directly from PayPal usually don’t come through an outside click-to-verify link, especially not one that bypasses the PayPal website.

So, how can we protect ourselves from such scams?

– **Do not click on unknown links**: If an email demands immediate action, don’t click on the link provided in the email. Instead, you should directly access your account by typing the URL directly into your browser.

– **Contacting the Company Directly**: If there’s any doubt, reach out to PayPal or any company through their official customer service channels instead of using the contact information provided in the email.

– **Using Email Scanning Tools**: Most email platforms have spam filters, and they could be a first line of defense, but they won’t catch everything.

– **Stay Updated On Scam Trends**: Companies like PayPal often have sections on their website or social media where they inform customers about the latest methods that scammers are using. Keeping yourself informed is key.
